Former e.s.t. bassist Dan Berglund releases his first solo recording in early 2010. The brand new self-penned music draws from his background in both jazz and rock, and of course grows out of his seminal role in the extraordinary e.s.t. story. After the untimely death of Esbjörn Svensson in June 2008, Dan and drummer Magnus Öström decided that it would be impossible to just add another musician to the trio to replace Esbjörn. Berglund has assembled a terrific quartet of fellow Swedes, playing music that stretches from e.s.t. to Pink Floyd, Royksopp and Arvo Part.

In the aftermath of Esbjörn Svensson´s untimely passing in the summer of 2008 his former band-mates Dan Berglund and Magnus Öström had to re-orientate and find a new meaning for their musical lives. As e.s.t. they had become a world sensation during the early years of the new millennium and were heralded as “Trio of the Decade” by The Times (UK).
Bassist Dan Berglund reunited with Johan Lindström, one of Sweden´s leading steel guitar players and former colleague from the “Per Texas Johansson” band and the next six months Martin Hederos, pianist of pop-outfit “Soundtracks of our Lives”, and drummer Andreas Werliin joined the jams, and step by step the four individuals became “Tonbruket”, a Swedish expression for a workshop/ factory that produces tones. Their self-titled debut album which was co-written by all four members was released in 2009 on the ACT label.
Throughout his career in e.s.t Dan Berglund was the “rock’n’roller” of the trio, citing artists like Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Ritchie Blackmore among his biggest musical influences. Later bands like Radiohead, Royksopp and Wilco wound their way into his ‘favourites’ list.
Tonbruket is clearly inspired by the latter groups and it throws a new light on Berglund’s importance within e.s.t. as a stylist and also soloist, bringing his strong artistry to the table, and shaping the sound of e.s.t. to something beyond that of a simple jazz-trio. Now with his new band he takes this approach further and opens it up to alternative and acoustic rock influences, and for the first time he also appears as a composer of catchy and intricate songs and melodies.
