Perhaps a future edition of 12 Points will feature all four of the remarkable young Sarikoski Brothers, but for now we meet two representatives, twenty two year old trombone wunderkind Kasperi, and his junior by two years, drummer Jonaton. Joining them are pianist Henri Mäntylä and bassist Vesa Ojaniemi, fellow students at The Sibelius Academy. The great Helsinki school has taught them well, and this is a collective that oozes confidence and a sense of purpose when it comes to swinging music, qualities more readily associated with players far their senior. Modal structures provide the frame for discursive journeys and taut control of pulse. The playing from all four is appropriately muscular and in Kasperi Sarikoski, an important voice on the trombone is taking shape.
