At just 26 years of age, Swedish musician Susanna Risberg is already well on her way to becoming one of Europe's leading guitarists. Her trio will release their second album in July 2018. Like many a ‘Voodoo Child’ inspired by Jimi Hendrix, Risberg got her first guitar at 10, determined to emulate her idol. Shortly thereafter, she discovered jazz. Not exactly a fluke then when she was awarded the prestigious ‘Jimi Hendrix award’ in 2011 while attending Berklee College of Music on a jazz scholarship. This just one of a succession of awards and accolades in her nascent career. In October 2015, Risberg was awarded the ‘Jazzkatten’ prize for ‘Newcomer of the Year’ by Swedish Radio. In 2017, Jazzwise’s Kevin Le Gendre pegged Risberg as “one to watch” on their annual list of emerging jazz musicians who will inspire, illuminate, and ignite the year ahead, describing her as “a brilliantly expansive soloist with a rapier attack”. Risberg certainly has the technical prowess and is ably abetted by her rhythm section of Sjöström and Lundberg, but it’s more than just that. Her ear for a strong melody and arrangement highlights her compositional skills as much as her playing, and its evident from the interplay that this is a working band that get it, have it, and aren’t afraid to dish it out. Moving effortlessly from rocky groove oriented pieces to more straight-ahead material, it's clear that Risberg has a healthy respect and deep understanding of jazz tradition. There are shades of Scofield and echos of Metheny, but ultimately it’s all Risberg. Hendrix move over, this Little Wing has soared
