Chris Guilfoyle's Pathways Trio
Chris Guilfoyle’s music for Pathways Trio traces a line from his earliest musical exploration as a punk guitarist, through forays into math rock, metal and electronic music. Their new interpretations of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Aphex Twin, Jimi Hendrix, and more will be a treat for any music lovers, guitar fans most of all!
Rescheduled from an original date in April, IMC is delighted to present the pan-European Trio ‘Pathways’, an international collaboration project, pulling in two top-class young European jazz musicians on a journey which explores musical roots and influences. Bassist Lukas Traxel and drummer Moritz Baumgartner are in-demand musicians in a multitude of projects across Europe, and have both previously performed (as has Guilfoyle) at IMC’s pan-European contemporary jazz festival 12 Points - Traxel with the Swiss Marie Krüttli Trio, Baumgartner with the German Lisbeth Quartett and Guilfoyle with Dublin-based Umbra.Known for his melodic and groove-driven quintet Umbra, Chris comes from a musical family which is a pillar of the Irish jazz scene - his father, bassist and composer Ronan Guilfoyle, and uncle drummer Conor Guilfoyle both having long left their mark on Irish jazz. As a performer, and as a lecturer on DCU’s degree programme in Jazz and Contemporary Music performance, Chris is also leaving a mark on the next generation. With this trio’s exploration of a myriad of great music, the Pathways trio explores what it means to be a contemporary jazz musician in a digital, post-genre world.
These three rising stars of European jazz come together in Dublin’s new space for jazz and improvised music - The Cooler. A former banana-ripening unit upstairs in The Complex Arts Centre, in the heart of Smithfield’s old fruit and veg district, The Cooler is now being run by Improvised Music Company as a home for Dublin’s improvising musicians to stretch their creative skills and have time to develop new, considered music, as well as a an occasional programme of live concerts.
