Izumi Kimura with Barry Guy & Gerry Hemingway
Following a successful pair of duo concerts with Barry Guy and Gerry Hemingway respectively last Spring, IMC is delighted to highlight the return of acclaimed Irish-based pianist Izumi Kimura with another unique and enticing one off concert for Dublin, bringing both of these musicians together for another thrilling musical encounter as a trio.
British bassist, composer & educator Barry Guy, and American percussionist, composer, visual artist and educator Gerry Hemingway, are two of the most respected improvisers working in this sphere today. Internationally recognised masters in their field, both have contributed hugely to shaping the improvised music landscape internationally over the past 4 decades.
Izumi Kimura is once again the fulcrum for this unique trio concert in St. Anne’s Church. Her talents as a pianist at the vanguard of contemporary improvisation are cemented by her existing work with these two musicians, in addition to a recently highlighted duo performance at IMC’s BAN BAM festival with violinist Cora Venus Lunny, as well as her celebrated solo work.
The concert promises spontaneity and music of the highest calibre, highlighting Kimura’s passion for bridging genres, cultures and languages with her intuitive and holistic approach to collective improvisation. It will also be the result of three days intensive rehearsals with Hemingway and Guy at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, this process itself being documented by filmmaker Cormac Larkin.
Says Kimura, “I feel excited to bring these musicians together, and to throw myself into this extraordinary musical situation and chemistry. Improvisation is about being in the moment, here and now. And each audience member is an important participator and a real time creator of the music too. Audiences are invited to join the journey with performers, through the act of listening, and each journey is unique to individual.”
This concert will be recorded for a future release and is supported by the Arts Council’s Project awards.
This concert will also be performed in Kilkenny on Friday 23rd February
