Matthew Berrill has not been idle in The Hague’s Royal Conservatory, where he’s been studying the last three years, as anyone who has recently heard the young Galway saxophonist in impressive full flight will attest. As the name implies, he has convened a band typical of the Dutch scene, which attracts young players from right across Europe. His talented confreres here include Swiss drummer David Meier, French bassist Brice Soniano and two Slovak musicians, pianist Michal Vanoucek and vibraphonist Miro Herak. The music is equally eclectic, and even confidently strays into Irish territory, with Berrill’s quirky arrangements of traditional reels.
