Signal Series March - Oxygen Thief feat. Aleka | Kevin Lawlor Quintet

The second edition of IMC’s monthly night of Irish jazz, The Signal Series, takes place on Tuesday 26th March. On the bill are Dublin-based guitar trio Oxygen Thief featuring Aleka. And the sunny south-east is represented by jazz drummer Kevin Lawlor with his quintet, joining us from Wexford.

The Signal Series is a live monthly double-header concert series from IMC presenting the best emerging and established jazz acts from across Ireland. Part of IMC’s commitment to celebrating Irish-based jazz talent in 2019, the Signal Series takes place in Dublin’s newest live music venue, The Wild Duck in Temple Bar on the last Tuesday of each month.

Oxygen Thief's music aims to reimagine the traditional confines of the jazz guitar trio by blending elements of math rock and electronica together with jazz. The trio featuring Chris Guilfoyle on guitar, Barry Donohue on bass and Matthew Jacobson on drums - has a unique chemistry through their years of playing as the rhythm section in the critically acclaimed quintet Umbra.

They’ve joined forces with Aleka, a Romanian vocalist based in Dublin, who has made a name for herself as one of the top jazz singers in Ireland, garnering attention of Irish jazz household names, most recently working with renowned guitarist Tommy Halferty. As well as playing in Ireland, she has been a featured guest with the Romanian Radio Big Band, singing arrangements of the American songbook and her own compositions. Aleka released her debut EP in November 2016, garnering a 4-star review from The Irish Times.

Our second act is the Kevin Lawlor Quintet, featuring Kevin Lawlor on drums, Kelan Walsh on saxophone, Colm Lindsay on guitar, Patrick Molitor on keys and Jack Rufus Kelly on bass.

Kevin Lawlor is a jazz drummer from Wexford performing original contemporary improvised music. Described as ‘a highly accomplished musician and composer with a well developed collaborative sensibility’(Jazzmann UK) his latest project and album is 'Last Days of Summer’, recorded in the National Opera House in 2018. The music is band-focused and through-composed giving pieces a more continuous narrative and a tight live set.

Join IMC in The Wild Duck each month and take a journey towards some of the best live music this country has to offer, signalling new directions in Irish jazz.

Please Note: There is some but not complete seating available in this venue. Seating will be allocated on a first-come, first served basis.

Ticket Note: IMC is committed to bringing high-quality improvised music at costs which are affordable to our audiences. However, due to the recent increase in VAT on event tickets to 13.5% we have found it necessary to raise ticket prices slightly to continue providing guaranteed remuneration to our artists.
