Raised in a musical family with roots in Brazil and Paraguay, these days Sonia Esquivel is a Dubliner, and its high time she made her Pendulum debut. With pianist Francesco Turrisi augmenting her regular trio of Argentine guitarist Lucas Gonzalez and Cuban percussionist Frailan Moran, this is a refreshingly authentic exposition of the subtleties of samba, bossa nova, choro and other Brazilian grooves. Singing in her first language, Esquivel applies a velvety warm voice and confident phrasing to the artful songs of Tom Jobim, Chico Buarque and Djavan, bringing a little of that carioca style to Aungier Street. With special guests, Argentinean duo Marianela Gulizia and Ariel Hernandez.
