Nick Roth 40 GAIA

IMC Navigator Jazz Residencies: Nick Roth at Ballina Arts Centre, Co. Mayo.

IMC is pleased to announce the fourth and final part of the new Navigator Jazz residency programme taking place in 2021, at Ballina Arts Centre, Co Mayo, in December and will welcome saxophonist, composer, producer and educator, Nick Roth.

Nick’s work explores the liberation of improvisation from composition, the impact of nature on technology and a contemporary interpretation of traditional music. “It is too rare nowadays for an artist to make music that is both as complex and brilliant as that of Roth” James Fleming, All About Jazz

A fascination with pattern, cycle and structure has led to ongoing conversations with mathematical biologists, forest canopy ecologists and hydrologists, seeking a conception of music as translative epistemology.

A curious predisposition and a steadfast refusal to accept the existence of boundaries between the real and the imaginary has led to collaborations with an array of international performers, composers, choreographers, directors, visual artists, festivals, poets and ensembles.

Nick is artistic director of Yurodny, a founding member of the Water Project and a partner at Diatribe Records, Ireland’s leading independent record label for new music.

His work is represented by the Contemporary Music Centre (CMC) and the Association of Irish Composers (AIC).

"The IMC Navigator residency offers an invaluable opportunity to engage in conversation with a local community through the international language of jazz. I am curious to discover and nurture new musical friendships, and hugely excited to have this chance to work and practise in the rich cultural landscape of Ballina Arts Centre." Nick Roth.

Ballina has a strong traditional heritage, encompassing music and dance and Ballina Arts Centre was developed to support the creativity and appreciation of the arts within the community.

Director of Ballina Arts Centre, Sean Walsh said, "We are delighted to be working with the Improvised Music Company on the Navigator Residency programme and absolutely thrilled to be working with Nick Roth. Nick is an exciting and innovative artist and we are really looking forward to working with him on the residency in Ballina. It's great that the IMC is doing this residency programme, making it possible for venues like Ballina Arts Centre to have artists like Nick come and work in the area for a meaningful period of time."
