An afternoon of stimulating panel discussions and presentations at BAN BAM festival on Saturday 25th November addressing topics relating to gender imbalance in the music industry, ahead of an exciting packed programme of jazz and improvised music from 7pm until late!
BAN BAM is a new one-day festival celebrating women in jazz and improvised music in The Complex, Dublin 7.

PANEL 1: 'Chicks Dig It' 4pm-5pm
Looking at education, role-modelling and empowering young women in music with inspirational case studies from European contemporaries.

PANELISTS:

Issie Barratt (composer, performer, producer, educator)

Issie Barratt is a composer, conductor, musician, record producer, and educator based in London. Issie’s music has been featured in many international festivals and conferences.In 1999 Issie set up the highly acclaimed Jazz Faculty at Trinity College of Music (London), which she headed until 2004, when she was offered a jazz fellowship. A much sought after composition teacher, Issie continues to teach composition, as well as serving as a mentor and adjudicator for various youth music festivals & competitions.

Rossella Bottone (founder of Girls Rock Dublin, musician & performer)

Girls Rock Dublin founder Rossella Bottone is a live sound engineer and multi-instrumentalist with a soft spot for building pedal effects. Throughout her 15+ year career in music, kicked off with an MA in Music Management, Marketing and Promotion completed in her native Italy, she has worked internationally in music event production, tour booking and management, and music journalism. She plays in the feminist queer trio ‘Fierce Mild’ and in the ‘Spook of the Thirteenth Lock’ electric guitar orchestra.

Matthew Berrill (Galway Jazz Festival Artistic Director, musician, educator)

Matthew graduated with a Masters Degree in Music Performance, where he specialised in jazz saxophone, clarinet and composition, studying with John Ruocco at the Royal Conservatoire, Den Haag, The Netherlands. He has played on many stages in Europe including the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland, Avignon Jazz Festival in France and throughout his home country of Ireland. Matthew is a keen educator and teaches in numerous music education projects throughout Galway County. He teaches clarinet, saxophone and flute as part of the 'Headford Music Works' scheme, and runs a successful summer school for members of the Headford Youth Orchestra. He is also the artistic director of the Galway Jazz Festival.

MODERATOR:

Ríona Sally Hartman (musician, music tutor, IMC Board Member)

Ríona Sally Hartman is a singer, songwriter and music tutor based in Dublin. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Performance and a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Science. She performs with a number of ensembles of various genres in Ireland and works in music education with Waltons and the NCH as well as devising private programmes. Riona sits on the Board of Directors of the Improvised Music Company.

PANEL 2: 'Key Changes' 5pm-6pm
Looking at gender imbalance in Irish jazz and the wider music scene, with an emphasis on the impact and importance of media, promoters and the musician in addressing this.

PANELISTS:

Angela Dorgan (Director of First Music Contact and Hard Working Class Heroes)

Angela Dorgan is the Managing Director and Founder of First Music Contact, a free information and advice resource for musicians and the independent music sector in Ireland. FMC’s guiding principle is to help musicians in the music sector at every stage of their career. Angela also manages the HARD WORKING CLASS HEROES festival which helps local artists to develop their careers. She also serves on the board of the National Campaign For the Arts (NCFA), which seeks to ensure that the arts are on local and national government agendas and are recognised as a vital part of contemporary Irish life.

Ellen Cranitch (Musician, Lyric FM Broadcaster & Galway Jazz Festival)

Originally a classically-trained flautist and composer, Ellen Cranitch presents ‘The Purple Vespertine’ on Lyric FM, a late-night music show which features music from every genre under the sun. Ellen is actively involved with the Galway Jazz Festival and acted as a co-programmer for the 2017 event. She is also co-founder and director of the Two Chairs Company, a theatre company which encourages the exploration of words and music in a variety of settings.

Ian Patterson (Music Journalist ‘All About Jazz’)

Freelance writer/editor, Ian Patterson has written for the multiple award-winning webzine All About Jazz since 2006. Nine years living in Laos - where, between jazz festivals, he worked as a social/environmental researcher - has given Ian a broad perspective on the thriving jazz/creative music scene throughout Asia – an ongoing area of personal interest. Since returning to Ireland in 2013 Ian has covered the arts in general for various national and international publications. He goes to far too many concerts but has learned to live with his addiction.

Aoife Concannon (BAN BAM Creative Producer & Marketing Manager with IMC)

Aoife Concannon is Creative Producer of BAN BAM and has been working with IMprovised Music Company for almost 6 years. Previous to this, she worked on a freelance basis as a Arts Publicist and Event manager in a variety of roles, including contracts with Edinburgh Fringe, Galway Arts Festival, PhotoIreland, Zanzibar International Film Festival, and the Dublin Fringe Festival.
