Friday 15th May, 20:00 GMT+1
Streaming on IMC's Youtube channel

IMC and Triskel are coming together to host a weekly sequence of online solo performances featuring leading Irish improvisers, streaming each Friday at 8pm.

The 6th piece in the sequences comes from virtuoso trombonist, composer and arranger, Paul Dunlea, who is in demand across genres. His original music builds on his gift for strongly flowing melodies with a tight sense of groove, and an ability to paint evocative pictures in sound.

In the Piece by Piece series, each artist’s input performance will influence or inspire the next performance in this musical chain. Piece by piece, artists will create new improvised work, based on the preceding work. Improvising musicians are uniquely skilled at interpretation and spontaneous creation allowing for fresh creation of the highest calibre.

Enjoy fresh new music, influenced in real-time, from world-class Irish improvising musicians, telling the story of these strange times through new music and live performance, piece by piece.

Piece by Piece is an exciting new initiative from IMC and Triskel Arts Centre, which brings an entirely new meaning to the term ‘online influencer’.

IMC and Triskel are committed to continuing to employ artists and engage audiences, particularly during these challenging times.

Paul Dunlea

Although at home in a variety of musical styles, Cork trombonist/composer/arranger Paul Dunlea concentrates primarily on Jazz and Improvisation. This has furthered his reputation as one of Irelands most in demand trombonists.

Dunlea has performed/toured/recorded with the likes of Mick Flannery, Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire), Bryce Dressner (The National), Lewis Nash, Peter Washington,Billy Drummond, Greg Gisbert,Tim Ries, David O' Rourke's O' Rourkestra, Marshall Gilkes, Ryan Keberle,Taylor Eigsti, Bob Millikan, The Crash Ensemble, The Dublin City Jazz Orchestra, Syd Lawrence Orchestra, Hot House Big Band,Cormac McCarthy’s Cottage Evolution, Brian Deady, Niall McCabe Band & The Hard Ground.

Dunlea is a graduate of the CIT Cork School of music holding both a Bachelors degree in trombone performance and a Masters degree in composition. He has held the chair of principle trombone with the Band 1 Brigade - Irish Defence Forces since 2001.

In 2011, Dunlea released his debut album ‘Bi-polAr’ to critical acclaim - reaching #1 in the iTunes chart. 2016 saw the release of his second album 'Fraternal' recorded at the renowned Bunker Studios, Brooklyn, NY featuring bassist Peter Washington, drummer Billy Drummond, guitarist David O’ Rourke (co-leader) & Cork’s Cormac McCarthy.

In 2013 Dunlea established his own big band as a creative outlet for his own compositions. To date, the band has performed sell out shows across the country in venues such as The Opera House, Cork, The Grand Opera House, Belfast & The Everyman Theatre - Cork along with headlining the 2015 Cork & Limerick Jazz Festivals. Entire concerts have also been broadcast nationally on both RTE and BBC radio.

As well as writing for his own various groups and ensembles, Dunlea's compositions and arrangements have been performed by The Dublin City Jazz Orchestra, Hothouse Big band, Crisis Point Big Band, Larry McKenna, Tony Miceli, Stan Sulzmann, Julien Seigel, Cathal Coughlan, Camille O' Sullivan, Dana Masters, Gareth Dunlop, Niall McCabe, Laoise Leahy, Anna Mitchell, Jack O'Rourke,Brian Deady, The Frank & Walters, Band of An Garda Siochana, Defence Forces Bands-Ireland, Cork School of Music Symphony Orchestra & CSM Wind Ensemble. He has also written/arranged for countless theatre productions, groups and recording artists including Mick Flannery's two number 1 albums - "Red To Blue" (2012 EMI records) & By The Rule (2014 EMI Records).

Recently Dunlea performed alongside some of the biggest names in the New York Jazz scene commemorating the music of Frank Sinatra. The band, led by Irish born guitarist David O’ Rourke, played 8 sell out shows at the famous Jazz Standard Club.

"Dunlea’s arrangements are consistently excellent and his pinpoint production makes for a clear, crisp sound that serves everybody well. Dunlea obviously has the ability to work across a variety of genres but this assured début will do much to establish his jazz credentials"
