Dublin-born cellist Lioba Petrie studied in Dublin’s Conservatory of Music and Drama, graduating in 2000 with a diploma in instrumental teaching and then graduating from NUI Maynooth with a BA Mus in 2001. Lioba is an active chamber musician and teacher.
With interests in both contemporary music and music for theatre, Lioba has been a member of the new music collective EAR (Electro-Acoustic Revue) since the group’s inception in 2001. She has also performed at the Dublin Electronic Arts Festival, and is a member of 3epkano, a seven-piece ensemble which composes sound tracks for classic silent and contemporary Irish films.
3epkano have appeared in the US, been featured at the Kinsale and Kilkenny Arts Festivals and recorded an album in October 2011. Lioba is also an enthusiastic improviser, and has attended masterclasses at the Berklee College of Music (Boston) and with cellist Erik Friedlander in New York.
Lioba also performs with the project 'Unshaped Form', which performs live scores to silent classics.
September 2015 took Lioba to Paris where she enjoyed an artist’s residency at the Centre Culturel Irlandais and was commissioned to compose and perform a new score to Chris Marker’s film “La Jette” (1967).
Lioba is also one of the co-ordinators of the SPIKE Cello Festival, along with fellow cellist Mary Barnecutt.
