“An outstanding performer, and one of the leading figures
in the modern Brazilian jazz scene.”
Guitar Player USA
In
Brazil
, they know something about great grooves and guitar players, and in Chico Pinheiro, the two have come together in dramatic fashion. This young
Sao Paulo
native has set the Brazilian music scene alight with a glorious synthesis of bossa and jazz that moves the idiom onward from the towering achievements of artists like Joyce and Baden Powell.
His European itinerary this spring includes collaborations with Brad Mehldau, a measure of his growing reputation in the jazz world, where his quicksilver phrasing and sophisticated harmony allied to an authentic carioca style is winning him many admirers.
Back home, he’s equally acclaimed by musicians from right across spectrum, working with leading singers like Ed Motta and Dori Caymmi, his fertile imagination finding new inspiration in Brazil’s rich trove of omnipresent rhythms that keep time for every ritual, from religion to futbol.
He sings too, in a sotto voce style that evokes the hushed intimacy of Joao Gilberto and Chet Baker, further evidence if it were needed, that here is a musician with something new and original to add to the great love affair between Brazil and jazz.
