He first came to international prominence in the 1970s when he led the legendary group Irakere, which included Latin jazz stars like Paquito D’Rivera and Arturo Sandoval. His live recordings at Ronnie Scott’s in London and the Village Vanguard in New York won a world-wide audience for his bravura virtuosity and garnered praise from audiences and musicians alike.
Now approaching his seventieth year, Chucho shows no sign of slowing down and this year he has put together a brand new 8-piece band, showcasing the best of Cuban musicians.He is also famed for his astonishing solo performances which draw on everyone from Duke Ellington to Chopin.
Proceeds from the Chuco Valdés concert will go towards Una Corda to help them in purchasing piano parts and materials to fix the pianos in Havana’s music schools and towards the repair and restoration of the historic National Workshop of Instrument Repair in the city.
