Darren Sigesmund Sextet - Pendulum

Darren Sigesmund Sextet

Canada has a fine lineage of jazz trombonists, the latest of which is Toronto’s Darren Sigesmund. Like many Irish musicians, he has benefited from numerous visits to Banff’s Creative Music Workshop, and the results are apparent on Strands II, his second cd as leader. Recorded in NYC with recent JJs visitor Tim Ries as special guest, the attractive character of his writing is immediately apparent, with a restrained use of Latin motifs and flavours that recalls the work of Miriam Alter, and the horn voicings and song progressions of the greatest Canadian of them all, Kenny Wheeler. Sigesmund has a warm, legato way with the trombone that fits the compositional mood perfectly, and his sextet is a who’s who of emerging artists on the Canadian scene, with vocalist Eliana Cuevas, saxophonist Luis Deniz, guitarist Reg Schwager, bassist Jim Vivian and drummer Ethan Ardelli.
