David Duffy Quartet

Double bassist and composer David Duffy will bring his latest album and live show ‘Where the Branches Begin’ to the Cooler, Dublin on Friday March 1st. Having spent the past six years living in Barcelona, he as assembled an international quartet of Swedish saxophonist, Emil Nerstrand, Catalan pianist Marc Martin, and Davie Ryan from Ireland on drums and with special guest Russian vocalist Ksenia Parkhatskaya, and created something that Jamie Cullum has described as "Fascinating and brilliant music", and BBC Music magazine called "Thoroughly captivating".

His latest album ‘Where the Branches Begin’ was released in October on Jazzville records and has since received critical acclaim, with plays on Jazzfm, RTE, BBC2, and Lyric Fm.

For the Cooler, David has created a new show which integrates Jazz into an immersive audio-visual space. Expect beautiful projections, processed saxophone, acoustic and electronic Jazz, song, some dance, and an incredible quartet that will create moving and evocative music, reminiscent of Portico Quartet, Nils Frahm and Mammal hands.

More About this Artist

David Duffy Quartet are a unique ensemble made up of four players on the fringes of Jazz, each with a distinctive approach to the genre. They are all diverse, non critical, creative musicians, free of genre and hierarchy to genres, allowing the quartet to explore everything from ambient electronic jazz with a distinctively Scandinavian sound, to intense compound time signatures, blurring the lines between contemporary classical, jazz, electronica and post rock.

This sound soon began attracting attention and led to the first ever commission by Cork Jazz Festival for a new work, to open the 2018 festival, in the stunning Live At St Lukes, Ireland's 2018 Munster venue of the year.

With over a decade of experience in the digital arts it was natural David would combine these skill sets with the commission, and "Unity" was born. Working with Barcelona-based visual artist Jan Barcelo, David created a through composed, 1 hour, immersive audio visual experience, using narrative, 4k projections, lighting and visuals, that takes the audience on an experience that explores concepts of altered states, birth and meaning.

As a composer his shows have headlined both international and national festivals such as Cork Film Festival, Cork Midsummer Festival, HOP Festival, Sonar, and Dublin Fringe.
