Fixity

Improvised Music Company presents an evening of shapeshifting sounds from Cork-based improvising ensemble Fixity.

...defined by its disregard for parameters. Few Irish artists push the invisible parameters of sonic exploration quite like Walsh.”
The Thin Air

An experimental music project led by Dan Walsh, the critically-acclaimed drummer and composer, Fixity’s music lives in a world where rock-and-roll, free jazz and noise co-exist - a rich palette of sounds brought into a cohesive groove by the intuitive interaction and intention of Walsh and his bandmates.

With an ephemeral line-up, and a long list of renowned collaborators, the group explores their tunes in collective improvisation with a fluid cast of musicians from various fields of intrigue.

Since the release of their debut double LP "The Things In The Room", Fixity has continued to expand on the impossibility of stillness in repetition, with an increasing network of collaborators and their welcome voices.

In 2022/3, Dan Walsh was selected for IMC’s 30/30 programme, a bespoke development and support initiative working with 30 of Ireland’s top improvising musicians over the course of a year.

For this performance, Fixity’s line-up includes some of Ireland’s finest established and emerging improvisers. Noted guitarist Shane Latimer wanders between nature and technology, using software and electronic processing. Cork multi-instrumentalist Sam Clague contributes his colourful range of sounds on flute, clarinet, bass and guitar. The horn section includes the rich tone and skilful playing of American-born, Dublin-based Steve Welsh, with the adventurous melodic explorations of rising young star Andrea Jones. With Walsh on drums, the rhythm section is rounded out with the intuitive playing of bassist Sean Maynard Smith, a pillar of the Irish jazz scene.

“...one of Ireland’s most formidable experimental/ improvisational outfits”
The Quietus
[No Man Can Tell] is a brilliantly loose, shapeshifting record that is quite difficult to compare to anything else, a testament to Walsh and his bandmates’ singular vision.
