Francesco Turrissi’s Tarab

Dublin based Italian pianist Franceso Turrissi presents this latest evolution of his Tarab ensemble, which is becoming eloquent in its linking of jazz modalism to traditional music from across Europe. Two perspectives are offered, the first a loose improvising trio with saxophonist Nick Roth and cellist Kate Ellis that explores material from Southern Italy, Turkey and Greece. To follow, an expanded quartet that includes traditional flautist Emer Mayock and percussionist Robbie Harris who bring to the table their own innate understanding of melody and form in Irish music. Turrisi, who also performs on accordion and Arabic frame drum, exercises taste and restraint throughout, deftly balancing these powerful elements to harmonious effect.
