NY NOW: Will Vinson/Lage Lund Quartet
New York still exerts an irresistible gravitational pull for talented young musicians form across the globe, and throughout 2010 Pendulum will be bringing you exciting green shoots from the world’s most demanding jazz scene. We hit the ground running with a stunning quartet co-led by two of the city’s hottest prospects. Alto saxophonist Will Vinson is a young Londoner based in NYC over the last decade, and his muscular alto is finding friends in NYC, where among other projects in the front rank, he’s a Mingus Big Band regular. Norwegian born Lage Lund is a brilliant guitarist in the contemporary vein of Kurt Rosenwinkel, and is the 2004 recipient of the Thelonious Monk Prize, now arguably the world’s most prestigious award for jazz soloists. Keen jazz followers will be familiar with their rhythm section of bassist Ben Street, mainstay of trios with guitarists Kurt Rosenwinkel and Ben Monder, and German drummer Jochen Ruckert, who’se previously graced Irish stages with memorable results. Collectively they lay down a marker for visits later in the year from Peter Van Huffel Group, The Story, and Pete Robbins Quartet.
