OpenJazz 2005: Music for everybody

6 hours of free performances, showcases, workshops and masterclasses by Ireland's leading jazz musicians!

After a three-year break, one of Ireland’s biggest free events for music fans came back in 2004, and OpenJazz 05 takes place on Sunday 20h March in The Temple Bar Music Centre, as part of The St Patrick’s Festival programme of events for young people.

Jazz has never been more popular in Ireland, with unprecedented numbers playing the music, studying jazz instruments and attending concerts, and OpenJazz is a one-stop shop for everything you need to know about this exciting musical tradition.

There'll be performances throughout the day from the best in new and established Irish jazz groups, taking you on a guided tour of its rich history, from blues to bebop and beyond.

Performances start at midday and continue throughout the day, in addition to showcases, workshops and masterclasses, and it’s all free.

Ireland finest players will be showing how its done in The Music Centre basement, where there'll be twenty four different workshops on everything from guitar, bass, drums, piano, percussion, saxophone, flute, trombone and more. There's plenty of opportunities for learning, especially if you’re interested in getting started on an instrument. We’ll also be adding new activities, including our annual jazz record fair.

With so much music under one roof, there really is something for everyone, whatever your musical taste or background. Jazz has come a long way and Ireland’s leading musicians can't wait to share it with you at OpenJazz 05. There's no cover charge, all you need to bring is an open mind and everbody is welcome, especially families and younger people.

Outstanding young Irish composer Dylan Rynhart with his talented, instrumentally diverse ten piece ensemble

Filmbase 1500h: The Wellington presents Toohorn Quartet
Creative drums, bass and two horn group led by saxophonist Sean Og, exploring the freedoms of melody and rhythm

Filmbase 1545h: The Wellington presents Dirty Jazz Band
jazz quintet that swings with a contemporary twist, with tenor/trumpet frontline and rhythm section.

Music Ctr 1600h: Isotope
Richie Buckley's tenor sax leads a a jazz standards work out with a stellar line up from Isotope's weekly residency at JJ Smyths.

Filmbase 1630h: Boom Boom Room presents Hora
Bitter sweet klezmer and infectious Balkan grooves from a jazz perspective, led by saxophonist Nick Roth.

Music Ctr 1700h: Havana Son
the irrepressible sound of guitar, voice and percussion driven Cuban son from this latest incarnation of leading Irish salseros Havana 'Che.

Music Ctr Basement 1300h - 1700h: Introductory Jazz Workshops
leading Irish musicians will be on hand for twenty workshops thoughout the day in a variety of individual and group formats to demonstrate and explain the instruments and styles used in jazz. Each workshop is 40 minutes, no experience necessary, and everyone is welcome, especially younger people.
