Partisans
“The godfathers of the flourishing UK prog jazz scene” -All About Jazz
“Partisans are that very good thing, an unclassifiable band.” Jazzwise
Described by London Jazz News as “the jewels of the British jazz scene for almost two decades”, Partisans are bringing their fresh sounds to Dublin audiences this September. This trailblazing quartet continue to break new ground and are the current holders of the Parliamentary Jazz Awards Jazz CD of the Year Award for their latest album ‘Swamp’.
Co-led by guitarist Phil Robson and saxophonist Julian Siegel with Thaddeus Kelly on bass and Gene Calderazzo on drums, Partisans aim to thrill. Famed for their ferociously energetic live performances and tightly knit themes they are celebrated for their unique sound, bridging the gap between New York swing, European improv and some good ol’ UK Rock while the combination of each member’s influences feeds genuine creative sparks that can come only through the almost telepathic understanding they have honed over the past two decades. Richly lyrical and melodic compositions, written by Robson and Siegel, provide the framework, underpinned by the rock solid, freewheeling and supercharged rhythm section of Kelly and Calderazzo.
With huge hype from the release of the critically acclaimed ‘Swamp,’ their first studio album in five years, Partisans have been flying high. Their groove based sound is pumped with viscous voodoo on this release with Hi-Life romps, burning post-bop, no messin’ rock outs and some seriously heavy hooks, leaving plenty of room for the melodic and lyrical to sweeten the ear. Partisans have brought this wonderfully avant-garde blend to audiences all over the world and make a welcome return to Dublin on September 24th.
“Everything from African and Caribbean influences to modernistic expansions of the jazz tradition and, when the group rocks out, doing so with complete and utter authority and credibility...an inimitable style that seems to get better every time”- John Kelman, All About Jazz (Ottawa Jazz Festival 2014)
“Partisans were the highlight of the festival, jazz that makes you blink in its glare”- John Fordham,The Guardian, (Cheltenham Jazz Festival)
