In just a few years since returning to Ireland after completing studies in Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Alex Matthias has progressed through the Irish jazz scene, working with RTECO, DCJO, Republic of Loose and The Commitments and leading his own hardworking quartet. On the evidence of Goin' Roamin’, the debut CD by the young tenor man from Bray, it’s been time well spent. The playing is considered and engaging, groovy and sentimental as required, and the palette firmly rooted in the classic post-Coltrane sound. It’s a refreshing band ethic too, with pianist Johnny Taylor, bassist James Little and drummer Dominic Mullan all playing their part in a convincing unit.
