Pendulum - Zahr
Zahr
This year’s Big Bang Percussion Festival goes out on a high with Zahr, another imaginative project from Turin born pianist, accordionist and percussionist Francesco Turrisi. Focusing primarily on the influence that Arabic music has had in Mediterranean countries, Turrisi is joined by the frame drum guru Andrea Piccioni, the internationally acclaimed virtuoso of the tammorra, riqq, daf, cajon and the bodhran too. Piccioni is a master of Arabic rhythms and hand drums, and especially the tamburello, Southern Italy’s ancient and enigmatic frame drum that’s an essential component of Italian folk dances like the Tarantella. Adding further Arabic authenticity and making his Irish debut is the exceptional Iraqi oud player Khyam Allami.
