PROGRESSIONS: Paolo Angeli
Throughout 2013 IMC plays homage to the Guitar - beginning with Sardinian jazz maestro Paolo Angeli.
From Rory Gallagher to Louise Stewart, and the thousands of players in every walk of music life, Ireland is a mighty country for guitar players. Throughout 2013, IMC is paying homage to this most versatile and expressive of instruments, and bringing you a brilliantly eclectic line up of guitarists, each with something personal to say. The line up for our first season of Progressions, with a further season to come in the autumn, reflects the centrality of the guitar in so much of today’s music from jazz and improvisation to rock and folk traditions.
Each concert is paired with a city venue that will bring out the best in players and audience alike. In February, St Audeon’s church will resonate to Paolo Angeli’s repurposed traditional guitar, radically modified with multiple drone strings and primitive mechanics, creating an orchestral palette for his freewheeling music that ranges from Sardinian folk song to Bjork. Paulo elaborates, improvises and composes unclassifiable music suspended between free jazz, folk noise and minimal pop.
