Signal Series: Ben Castle Quartet | Sue Rynhart

The Signal Series: New Directions in Irish Jazz
Sue Rynhart | Ben Castle Quartet

Improvised Music Company present a new monthly live event called ‘The Signal Series’ on the last Tuesday of every month in Dublin's newest music venue, The Wild Duck, on Sycamore Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2.

On the bill will be a double header of some of the best emerging and established Irish jazz and improvised music acts from across the country. The first event in The Signal Series takes place on Tuesday 26th February with a top-level double-header of the celebrated composer and vocalist Sue Rynhart with her band, as well as recent Dublin adoptee, saxophonist Ben Castle.

Although purely a coincidence, it is fitting that we kick off this brand new monthly Signal Series with an artist whose 2017 album was titled 'Signals'. Rynhart’s second album was at the time, a sign of things to come from one of Ireland's foremost vocalists, and today, it's a signpost highlighting of the enormous talent we have in Ireland. Sue Rynhart has been crafting her unique and captivating blend of neo-folksy, jazz-laden, classically inspired original music to critical acclaim, stemming from her groundbreaking work as part of the 10 piece Fuzzy Logic Ensemble
Her songs, both soulful and severe, are a fine fusion of the avant-garde and the emotive.

Joining her on the night are keys maestro Darragh O'Kelly with longtime bass partner Dan Bodwell completing an impressive trio.

"These are beautifully sculpted vignettes that seduce on multiple levels. She's only two albums in, but already Rynhart sounds like one of the most original emerging voices in the hazy world where folk, improvisation and contemporary song entwine" - All About Jazz

Recently relocated to Ireland, English saxophonist Ben Castle has worked with an enviable who’s who of musicians from Radiohead to Robbie Williams, Sting to Stan Tracey and Amy Winehouse to Aretha Franklin. It’s safe to say that Castle is a celebrated sideman, however, as a “musician who puts emotion ahead of licks” (Jazzwise) Castle is also a wonderful composer and bandleader.

Intuitively combining natural talent with studied skill and a top drawer trio, Castle crafts his own brew of bebop groove, melody and great compositions. At the inaugural Signal Series this will be a set of Castle’s material, with fine backing from Cian Boylan (keys), Darren Beckett (drums), and Dave Redmond (bass).

Join IMC in The Wild Duck on the 26th February for the first monthly journey towards some of the best live music this country has to offer, signalling new directions in Irish jazz.

Please Note: There is some but not complete seating available in this venue. Seating will generally be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
