July sees a special summer edition of IMC’s Signal Series, featuring some of the brightest lights in jazz from Northern Ireland. The Tommy Halferty Organ Trio make this their only Dublin stop on a nationwide tour which celebrates the late guitarist John Abercrombie. Jazz vocalist Katharine Timoney joins them on the bill with her quintet, which includes some of Ireland’s finest jazz musicians.
Tommy Halferty’s Timeless will see The Wild Duck as the only stop in the capital on a nationwide tour celebrating John Abercrombie. The late guitarist was one of the most important & influential figures in jazz guitar history, and performed in Dublin on a number of occasions at IMC-hosted events. Abercrombie’s compositions, including ‘Ralph’s Piano Waltz’, have become an essential part of the jazz repertoire. A pioneer of a ‘less-is-more’ style, he was at the forefront of an incredibly innovative period in improvised music and went on to produce an extensive and rich catalogue of albums, right up until his final year. As a close friend of Abercrombie’s, Derry-born guitarist Tommy Halferty has sourced a collection of compositions highlighting the varied work of the late, great jazz musician. Joining him on this incomparable celebration of jazz guitar-playing are two of Ireland’s most exciting & versatile musicians - Scott Flanigan on Hammond organ & Kevin Brady on drums.
Katharine Timoney is one of the brightest stars of the Northern Ireland jazz scene. With a smooth and incredibly flexible voice, reminiscent at once of both Billie Holiday and early Amy Winehouse, she blends cabaret-style jazz singing with a winning openness of expression. Katharine is a winner of this year's BBC Platform Award in the Jazz Category sponsored by The Arts Council of Northern Ireland and as part of this performed her self-penned songs with The Ulster Orchestra. The Katharine Timoney Quintet sees the young singer join forces with the experience of jazz stalwarts including trumpeter Linley Hamilton, pianist Scott Flanigan, bassist Dave Redmond, and drummer Kevin Brady.
Part of our commitment to celebrating Irish-based jazz talent in 2019 and beyond, the Signal Series is a live monthly double-header concert series from IMC presenting the best emerging and established jazz acts from across Ireland.
