Whirligig VI - Irish Showcase
Swoo-Beh is an adventurous ensemble, led by uninhibited vocalist Edel Meade. Drawing on everything from live radio samples to free improvisation and groove music, her bold compositional statements mark a willingness to explore new modes of expression. She’s already won plaudits from singers like Ian Shaw and Honor Heffernan. Swooh-Beh bristles with new jazz talent including guitarist Chris Guilfoyle and drummer Tommy Gray.
Leafzang explore freewheeling terrain that acknowledges the influence of Nordic artists like Jan Garbarek and the output of the ECM label. Cello, clarinet, saxophone, acoustic guitar, upright bass and drums are a rich colour palette for the writing of guitarist Patrick Groenland, striving for something folky and lyrical with a universal appeal.
The temperature turns up a notch with Groove, vehicle for the refreshingly funky guitarist and occasional emcee Max Zaska and his unashamed love affair with old school R’n’B, mixed with a playful poke at jazz convention. The tunes are on the money, the three vocalists posess oodles of soul conviction, and they already have Electric Picnic and Knockanstockan shows under their belt.
Bringing it home are Mixtapes from the Underground, who fairly knocked it with two exhilarating sets at Roberts Glasper’s recent sold out Dublin show. Drummer Dennis Cassidy lays down an arresting backbeat, Darragh O’Kelly offering gritty organ lines and guest emcees do the rest. Mixtapes might just be the next big thing on the jazz meets hip hop trail.
