Culture Ireland grant 5 Bursary Awards for Jazzahead! 2018
As part of IMC’s commitment to representing the Irish jazz sector abroad, and with the continued invaluable support of Culture Ireland, we are delighted to announce the recipients of 5 bursaries, funded by Culture Ireland, to attend the Jazzahead! trade show in Bremen, Germany 19-22 April 2018.
Culture Ireland’s Jazzahead! bursaries are aimed at professionals who have a track record of achievement in the contemporary jazz genre. The 5 successful applicants will join IMC at the tradeshow, using the shared Music From Ireland/ Jazz from Scotland stand as a base.
This is a very exciting networking event for Irish jazz professionals and we are delighted to announce that Culture Ireland has awarded bursaries to the following recipients;
Eddie Lee (Sligo Jazz Project)
Brian Carson (Moving on Music)
Sue Rynhart (musician/composer)
Kevin Brady (musician/composer)
Matthew Jacobson (Diatribe)
Eddie Lee is a bassist, composer, educator, producer, and will attend Jazzahead in his role as director of the Sligo Jazz Project, the international jazz summer school and festival which takes place in Sligo every July. Sligo Jazz Project's international summer school has grown into Europe's biggest jazz education even, and Eddie will attend Jazzahead with a view to finding like-minded European partners in jazz education. SJP hope to network with musicians and festivals who have an educational bias and may be interested win collaborating in the future.
Brian Carson established the not-for-profit music promotion company Moving on Music and is CEO of this Belfast based organisation based, which produces the annual jazz festival, Brilliant Corners, as well as annual jazz tours in NI and throughout the island, supporting local jazz artists through commissioning and providing professional development opportunities. Jazzahead will be an excellent opportunity for Brian to meet with agents and artists who will form part of MOM’s future programmes. Brian is keen to draw the attention of international delegates to act and artists particularly from the north of the island, such as Robocobra Quartet, Scott Flanigan Trio, Joseph Leighton Trio, Jack Kelly and the recently reformed Brian Irvine Ensemble.
Sue Rynhart is a vocalist and composer from Dublin. Sue's debut album 'Crossings' and her latest album 'Signals' have both received international acclaim. Sue has performed her music at many festivals such as Electric Picnic, Guinness Cork Jazz Festival, Drogheda Arts Festival, Bray Jazz Festival, Waterford New Music Week, Liverpool Irish Festival at the Liverpool Philharmonic Music Room, Jazzy Colors Festival Paris. Sue considers this Culture Ireland bursary to attend Jazzahead an excellent opportunity for her career, getting the chance to meet face-to-face with agents, managers and promoters at Jazzahead with a view to securing performances abroad.
Kevin Brady is a professional musician and jazz educator from Dublin, Ireland with over twenty five years experience performing and recording both nationally and internationally. Kevin has researched and studied many different ethnic drumming styles and this has led to extensive study periods in Havana, Cuba with World renowned percussionists Jose Eladio Amat & Luis Papine. In Ireland, Kevin performs regularly with The Phil Ware Trio, The Richie Buckley Quintet & The Tommy Halferty Trio.
Matthew Jacobson is a drummer, composer, bandleader, educator and producer currently based Dublin. Matthew will attend Jazzahead in his capacity as co-director of ‘Diatribe’ Ireland's leading record label for new sounds, representing leading creative Irish artists such as ReDiviDeR, OKO, Insufficient Funs, Yurodny, and new music artists Caoimhín O'Raghallaigh, Izumi Kimura, Francesco Turrisi, Kate Ellis, Cora Venus Lunny and Simon Jermyn. In addition to recordings, Diatribe serves as concert producer, curating live performances and festivals internationally - including the recent Éiríocht: New Music from Ireland as part of Culture Ireland: GB18. Jazzahead is an important opportunity to meet presenters of new and creative music from all over the world, in order to further Diatribe’s objective of gaining international recognition for the exceptional quality and diversity of work created by our artists.

Working with IMC, Culture Ireland established this bursary scheme in 2017, expanding it in 2018 in order to increase Irish presence at jazzahead. The 4-day event attracts more than 3000 industry attendees from over 55 countries, including hundreds of concert and festival bookers, labels, publishers, distributors, managers and the world's media. Since its formation in 2006 jazzahead! has become the principal annual showcase for the jazz industry throughout Europe and increasingly Asia, and the US. In 2017 this specialist trade fair welcomed 1,356 exhibiting companies, with 17,664 people in attendance at the Showcase performances. www.jazzahead.de
