Matthew Jacobson artist-in-residence at Jazz Connective UK

IMC are happy to announce that Irish percussionist Matthew Jacobson has been selected as artist-in-residence for Jazz Connective’s UK edition, taking place in Birmingham and London in March. IMC is delighted to help create opportunities for Irish artists as part of its partnership in Jazz Connective, a collaborative artist-focused project, which is taking place during 2019 and 2020 across seven partner European cities.

As a member of Insufficient Funs, Matthew has previously been invited to collaborate with Finnish saxophonist Mikko Innanen for the Helsinki edition of Jazz Connective. During Jazz Connective’s Dublin edition, Matthew was involved as a member of the panel for the Public Discussion ‘What makes a scene a scene?’ providing his valuable insight as an educator, programmer and record label director, as well as a widely-respected artist in the Dublin jazz scene.

Jazz Connective UK Residency

Matthew will be collaborating with a number of UK artists over the course of a week in Birmingham during the Jazz Connective events. While in Birmingham he will also be participating in an artist-in-residence sharing session on Tuesday 10th March.

The fruits of these collaborations will be performed in two concerts in London’s Vortex Jazz Club on March 11th and 12th, as part of London’s Jazz Connective events. On Wednesday March 11th, Matthew will be collaborating with trumpeter Percy Pursglove, bassist Chris Mapp and saxophonist Alicia Gardener-Trejo.

On Thursday March 13th, Matthew performs in the concert ‘Resonances: where art and music improvise together’, in collaboration with visual artist Aurelie Freoua and dancer Petra Haller.

Matthew Jacobson

“...one of the most dynamic forces in Irish jazz…” [Irish Times] Matthew Jacobson is an Irish drummer, composer, bandleader, educator and producer currently based in Dublin. He completed his BA in Jazz Performance at Newpark Music Centre, Dublin in 2008 and in 2010 he received a Masters Degree in Music Performance from Lucerne University, Switzerland. Matthew has represented his country numerous times – touring with the European Jazz Orchestra in 2008 and performing with Irish participants at 12 Points Festival on four occasions – and performs regularly in Ireland and abroad. He is a co-director of Diatribe Records, Ireland's leading record label for new sounds and is the Irish co-producer of European exchange tour network and annual festival Match&Fuse. Since 2010, Matthew has been a member of faculty on DCU’s BA in Jazz and Contemporary Music Performance program (formerly Newpark Music Centre) – lecturing in drums, ensembles and music business.

Jazz Connective

Jazz Connective is a collaborative artistic and professional exchange between seven different European jazz-related organisations, taking place during 2019 and 2020 across six countries. It is a project built to sustainably strengthen the jazz scenes of each country (including promoters and producers, musicians and professionals) by exploring the issues of these scenes on a European scale. Jazz Connective is supported by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union and is led by Le Périscope, Lyon.
