NAVIGATOR Artist in Residence announced for Source Arts Centre

IMC and Source Arts Centre are delighted to announce musician and composer Mathew Noone as the second artist in residence for the 2023 NAVIGATOR programme.

The 10-day Navigator Jazz Residency programme was established in 2021, and since then nine musicians have enjoyed bespoke residencies through venue partners Ballina Arts Centre, The Source Arts Centre, Thurles, An Grianán in Letterkenny and The Courthouse, Co. Wicklow. NAVIGATOR offers jazz and improvising musicians professionally remunerated time and space to develop and perform work, while building creative and professional relationships in new locations.

IMC 30/30 artist Matthew Noone is an Australian-Irish ex-indie rocker, improviser, composer, thinker and performer of the 25 stringed lute, called sarode. He has studied music for many years in India & the UK and works in a diverse range of disciplines ranging from Irish traditional and Indian classical to free improv and electroacoustic music. He is currently the Acting Course Director of the BA in World Music at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick. He will be heading to Thurles for 10 days this June to explore his own solo practice and engage with the local landscape and music community as part of IMC’s Navigator Residency programme.

Matthew Noone said “I am really excited about my upcoming residency in the Source Arts Centre in Thurles. It is such a wonderful opportunity to find space and time to allow new creative ideas to percolate and emerge. I hope to connect with the local community through sharing some of my skills and through a public performance. I am also looking forward to connecting with the local natural and wild landscape, including the Suir river in town and Cabragh Wetlands.”

Matthew Noone performs some traditional Irish melodies, original compositions and improvisations.

Matthew is an IMC 30/30 artist, a platform and artist development programme supporting 30 of Ireland's finest improvisers over a year in celebration of 30 years of Improvised Music Company.

Brendan Maher, Director of Source Arts Centre said “We are delighted to have Matthew Noone come to Thurles for the IMC NAVIGATOR residency. The residency offers the dual opportunity for Matthew to work on his own music and projects whilst also linking in with the local community in Tipperary, during his stay. We look forward to his engagement with us at The Source, this June."

The NAVIGATOR residency programme is part of IMC's commitment to further develop the national scene for jazz and improvised music, improve artist touring mobility, develop audiences nationwide, and develop creative opportunities and fruitful new relationships for musicians. Aoife Concannon, Creative Producer with Improvised Music Company said; “Delighted to continue and deepen our relationship with The Source with the NAVIGATOR musician in residence for a third consecutive year. Matthew is a highly innovative improviser, and we look forward to hearing about the fruits of his time in Thurles.”

The 2023 Navigator jazz residency programme has been expanded to 7 partners across the island of Ireland, with Garter Lane, Waterford, Riverbank Theatre, Newbridge and Crescent Arts Centre, Belfast joining the initial 4 other partners.

Three of the residencies are programmed from IMC’s 30/30 programme and the other four residencies by an open call.

Further NAVIGATOR artist residencies will be announced in due course.
