SPECTRUM Saturday

Saturday night (11th of March) is the big night at SPECTRUM festival, kicking off with an international double-header from Norwegian band the Hedvig Mollestad Trio and the Belgian instrumental trio Dans Dans. Then from 11pm til late, Homebeat present SPECTRUM club, a hand picked celebration of the beautiful frayed edges of LIVE contemporary Irish electronica featuring the ethereal ambience of Dublin producer Kobina's glitchy soundscapes, along with driving synth of White Collar Boy's pop electronica in Whelan’s upstairs. Individual, Festival and Saturday night tickets also allow you access to all SPECTRUM speaks sessions.

SPECTRUM live

7:30pm / Sat 11th March / The Opium Rooms / double headline show

Dans Dans (BE)

‘It is a musical journey and a mental experience for people who like to dive into another world, away from the everyday, floating in a place far beyond our galaxy.’ - Front View Magazine

Belgian trio Dans Dans create jazz without stuffiness, rock without blinkers and avant-garde music without pretension. The cinematic sounds of this collective features Bert Dockx (frontman of the acclaimed Flying Horseman), Frederic Jacques and Steven Cassiers. Since their debut in 2012, the trio has been astounding listeners with music that is impossible to pin down in a single genre. Instrumental, atmospheric, delicate and wild: Dans Dans tirelessly construct their own musical universe and time and again demonstrate why they are one of the most intriguing bands currently working in Belgium and far beyond.

Hedvig Mollestad Trio (NO)

‘Comparing musicians to forces of nature is often the first refuge of the uninspired, but it’s difficult to know how else to describe Hedvig Mollestad Thomassen. There’s something elemental about her guitar playing… creating sonic currents and eddies in the air as she passes through.’ - The Quietus

Led by Norwegian guitarist Hedvig Mollestad, whose highly acclaimed jazz talent combined with a riot grrrl attitude and raw punk energy make for a mesmerizing force. This trio pulses with a dark, primal aesthetic, creating music that is progressive and exhilarating, with an homage to the avant prog-rock of King Crimson, the blues-laden psychedelica of Hendrix with more than a subtle influence from the free-jazz aesthetic of Gustafsson & Brotzmann.

Hedvig Mollestad (guitar, vocals), Ellen Brekken (bass) and Ivar Loe Bjørnstad (drums).

SPECTRUM club

11:30pm til late / Whelan's upstairs

Kobina

Dublin based, electronic musician Kobina, pulls together diverse and disparate musical strands to create a uniquely textured and emotive sound. Kobina’s breathless, glitchy soundscapes inspired both ‘Whelan’s and State.ie to name him as ‘One to watch’ in 2015. In 2013, Kobina released his debut album ‘Ahome E.P’ and more recently in 2016, released a follow up entitled ‘Sentinel Island’ which won him rave reviews from many in the alternative music media.

White Collar Boy

'the dreamy, ambient grooves on their Solar Midnight mini-album gave way to freewheeling rhythms, razor-sharp hooks and periodically, bone-shaking thumps, made all the more charming with some eerie, booming vocals.' - Hot Press

The vital live vocals and driving synth of White Collar Boy have enthralled audiences since 2011 when Mark Cummins and Gavin White came together to form this progressive electronic duo. Following their initial release ‘Kinsale,’ the pair have become a mainstay on the Irish festival scene playing everywhere from Forbidden Fruit to Body & Soul and more boutique festivals such as Drop Everything.
