Upcoming Gigs for 2017: Two Diverse shows with a mix of International and Domestic Performers

Improvised Music Company are delighted to be presenting two diverse and exciting gigs in January 2017, kicking the jazz year off to a good start!

The Phil Ware Trio will be joined by award winning UK jazz vocalist Ian Shaw in The Workman’s Club, Dublin on Saturday the 21st of January. Tickets are €15 and are available here. Subsequently, on Monday 23rd of January, pianist Izumi Kimura and drummer Gerry Hemmingway will perform an innovative piano/drum duo in the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin. More information about the Kimura and Hemingway gig is available here.

The Phil Ware Trio will be celebrating a decade of collaborating with vocalist Ian Shaw. Their original musical meet-up was at the Galway Jazz Festival in 2006; Phil invited Ian back to guest with the trio in Dublin in 2007, and RTÉ Lyric FM reunited them later that year for The Blue of the Night Live, broadcast from the Dublin Fringe Festival. Ian calls the Trio a ‘dream band’, and their partnership has continued with many appearances in Ireland and the UK, including Ronnie Scott’s and Pizza Express Jazz Club in London. Phil also features on Ian’s highly acclaimed 2010 recording The Abbey Road Sessions.

Entering their 15th year of working together, the Phil Ware Trio are renowned both for their driving swing and for their sparse, atmospheric approach to down-tempo material. Don’t miss them in Dublin on 21st January.

On Monday, January 23rd, radical composer and percussionist Gerry Hemingway will join Izumi Kimura to perform a free concert at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin. This concert will be preceded by an earlier performance in The Mick Lally Theatre, Galway on Saturday 21st January, presented by Galway Jazz Festival.

Izumi Kimura is a highly acclaimed practitioner of contemporary piano music, improviser, and educator. She has performed extensively throughout Ireland and abroad as a solo, orchestral and chamber musician, and has worked with some of the leading performers and ensembles from both disciplines of classical and jazz.

Over the course of the past year, Izumi has been building a musical relationship with Hemingway within the context of a duo format, allowing both musicians to explore and strengthen undiluted interplay through the purest form of communication.

This project marks a milestone in Izumi Kimura’s career. This project has so far challenged and expanded Kimura’s vision and possibilities as a musician, technically, interpretatively, and improvisationally.
