Our only piano trio at 12 Points 2012, provide robust evidence that gold can still be mined from the union of piano, bass and drums. Spurred on by the compositions of pianist Fulco Ottervanger, bassist Lieven Van Pee and drummer Simon Segers offer us an intriguing proposition that straddles the classical and jazz worlds. Since meeting in Ghent conservatory in 2009, De Beren Gieren have been pursuing a vocabulary they can call their own, and its bearing fruit. The group has a restless dynamic, moving from flowery romanticism to fractured pointillism as the mood dictates, often taking in some groovy urgency or old school stride along the way. It’s a genuine hybrid that never sounds contrived. Quite the opposite, they project a sense of enjoying their musical work that is infectious.
