Kicking off IMC's Signal Series for 2020 are two bands which demonstrate the benefits of a long history of studying, playing and developing music together, resulting in their tight, dynamic and fully rounded sounds.
South African saxophonist and adopted Irishman Chris Engel has cultivated a successful career in jazz and improvised music throughout Europe with his chameleon-like musical talents; adept in small and large ensembles, free improv, contemporary jazz, and latterly electronic music. Through this lens of electronic bits and bytes, BigSpoon emerge. This musical offering is a crystallization of Chris’ musical journey which brings all of his impulses and influences to bear in the company of some of Ireland's leading improvisers and electro-sonic explorers. Representing Ireland at IMC's 12 Points festival in 2017, BigSpoon create a sound world designed to immerse both the artist and the audience. With influences ranging from Jaga Jazzist to Weather Report, this is visceral and mesmerizing 21st century jazz with organic heart and and electronic soul.
Led by Irish-based German guitarist, Matthias Winkler, ÄTSCH fuse contemporary jazz improvisation with the sound aesthetics of modern-day post-rock. ÄTSCH create a soundworld rich in lyrical melodies with ample space for each of the soloists to shine. Taking their cues in equal measure from post-rock giants like Sigur Rós or Explosions in the Sky, as well as contemporary Jazz artists such as Gilad Hekselman or Julian Lage, ÄTSCH have certainly got the attention of the European Jazz Scene, being the first Irish artists to perform in Jazzahead’s Club night series which runs concurrent to the main showcases in Germany.
The Signal Series is a live monthly double-header concert series from IMC presenting the best emerging and established jazz acts from across Ireland, taking place on the first Thursday of each month in Arthur's Blues & Jazz Club.
