Now entering its fifth year, the annual visit by Berklee College of Music has become a pivotal development on the Irish jazz scene. Over four days at Newpark Music Centre in Blackrock, leading members of its world renowned faculty host masterclasses and workshops for young musicians from Ireland and abroad, many of who will be auditioning for valuable scholarships to Boston's unique school for jazz and related music.
Berklee's impressive teaching staff is drawn from the highest echelons of performing artists and as with previous visits, Dublin will get a chance to hear some of them in full flight. Based in Boston since 1986, guitarist Rick Peckham is active internationally as a performer, teacher and writer and returns to Ireland following his invaluable contribution as mentor to IMC’s inaugural development tour for young Irish musicians in October 05. Saxophonist Michael Buckley, bassist Ronan Guilfoyle and drummer Sean Carpio are the players with the home advantage, equally demonstrating that the best teachers lead by example with an eloquent, collective display of the jazz musician's craft. School's out.
