The series was launched today by Lord Mayor of Dublin Tom Brabazon.
Founded by Dublin City Council and presented in association with First Music Contact, Improvised Music Company, Contemporary Music Centre, & Music Network, the Wood Quay Summer Sessions allow music fans to experience an incredible mix of music from new and established traditional, jazz, contemporary and alt-rock acts.
This year, the online Sessions will feature mesmerizing new jazz from BigSpoon, a programme of music by leading composers from Ireland performed by Cassiopeia Wind Quintet, glorious traditional music from Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and Mick O’Brien and fresh alt-rock tunes from Pow Pig.
In addition to the video performances from the four acts, Dublin's Near FM 90.3 will broadcast special programmes on concerts each Thursday 6pm, featuring the performances alongside behind-the-scenes chats with the artists.
July 9th - BIGSPOON presented with Improvised Music Company
Chris Engel - saxophone, effects, electronics
Matthew Jacobson - drums & percussion
Darragh O'Kelly - keyboards & synths
Shane O'Donovan - electronics & synths
South African saxophonist and adopted Irishman Chris Engel has cultivated a successful career in jazz and improvised music throughout Europe with his chameleon-like musical talents; adept in small and large ensembles, free improv, contemporary jazz, and latterly electronic music. Through this lens of electronic bits and bytes, BigSpoon emerges. This musical offering is a crystallization of Chris’ musical journey which brings all of his musical impulses and influences to bear in the company of some of Ireland’s leading improvisers and electro-sonic explorers. BigSpoon creates a sound world designed to immerse both the artist and the audience in a shared musical experience. With influences ranging from Jaga Jazzist to Weather Report, this is visceral and mesmerizing 21st century jazz with organic heart and electronic soul.
JULY 16th - CASSIOPEIA WINDS presented with The Contemporary Music Centre
(Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon & French Horn)
Cassiopeia Wind Quintet was founded ten years ago by five friends with a desire to dive into the glorious repertoire of wind chamber music of the past 250 years. Consisting of Catriona Ryan (flute), Matthew Manning (Oboe), Deirdre O’Leary (Clarinet), John Hearne (Bassoon) and Cormac Ó hAodáin (French Horn), the ensemble presents the startling originality and the sumptuous palette of tone colours of the wind quintet and expands to include works for larger forces. Their performances run the full and varied gamut of the wind repertoire from 19th-century to contemporary works, and they have a dedication to bringing the lesser-known works of this repertoire into Irish and international concert halls and festivals. The ensemble also has a great interest in supporting the work of composers from Ireland.
Cassiopeia Winds has had the great pleasure of collaborating with well-loved and renowned musicians Finghin Collins, ConTempo Quartet, Melvin Tan, and Lise de la Salle, among others. They have performed at most of the major classical music festivals in Ireland and have given live performances on Sunday Miscellany on RTÉ Radio 1. They have been regular performers at Dublin’s Kaleidoscope Night, and have toured Ireland twice with the generous support of the Arts Council.

(lo-fi alt-rock band)
Pow Pig are a dynamic band hailing from Limerick, comprised of Anna Marie Rooney, Andreea Mocanu, Laura Drennan and Leah O’Donnell.

An Irish Times “Artist of the Week”, and an Other Voices “Listener’s Choice” winner, PowPig have also supported beloved Irish acts such as Pillow Queens, Whenyoung, and Girlband for two nights in Vicar Street.
