International Jazz Day 2019

30th April 2019 is International Jazz Day, and we want to put Irish jazz on the International map!

What is International Jazz Day?
International Jazz Day was designated by UNESCO in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe. Jazz Day brings together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about jazz and its roots, future and impact.

Fundamentally it’s a great opportunity to celebrate this incredible genre of music, its history, variety and innovation, and for us at IMC it’s a wonderful way to celebrate the constant creativity of Irish jazz artists.

Want to get involved?

Invite a friend to jazz
Have a friend who wouldn’t necessarily be a jazz fan? Today is the perfect opportunity to invite them along to a gig! Have a look through our events and listings.

To celebrate #JazzDay we've made this month's Signal Series completely FREE, you can register HERE to see ReDiviDeR and the Aoife Doyle Band at The Wild Duck, on Tuesday 30th April.

Or ask someone to listen to our playlists, we’ll be very surprised if there isn’t something there for all curious ears! We've got golden standards by Irish artists HERE, or a mix of Ireland's best jazz artists HERE.

We also asked what YOUR favourite classic jazz was, and we've collected all those brilliant tracks into a playlist of Ireland's favourite classic jazz!

Prefer a quiet one?
You can even sit at home and listen to some great music. Throughout this month we’ll be sharing playlists of some great Irish jazz artists, and some classic recordings - you can find something new or listen to your old favourites. Tag us on social media, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and use the hashtags #jazzIRL or #JazzDay, we’d love to see what records you’re listening to or what gigs you attend.

Irish jazz musicians
Help us out! We want to hear about all jazz events on and around Jazz Day. If you have anything coming up between now and then, please send us details of your gigs to admin [at] improvisedmusic.ie which we can add to our listings. Not working on Jazz Day? Turn out for FREE to our Signal Series, or support fellow musicians at any gig close by!

We’ll be working all this month to get people turning out to hear live jazz all over the country. Tag us on social media Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and use the hashtags #jazzIRL for Ireland and #JazzDay to engage with Jazz Day promotions all over the world.

Organizing a gig on 30th April?
You can register events happening on the 30th April itself on International Jazz Day’s website here, an international database of listings. They’re happy to feature all kinds of events, not just concerts - talks/meetings/livestreams, anything’s game. There are also toolkits and ideas on how to promote your event through International Jazz Day here, and ideas for projects for educators here.

We’ll also be creating curated playlists to get people listening to Irish jazz through the month, so you can send us favourite tracks of yours to consider, ideally through Spotify links to admin [at] improvisedmusic.ie

Enjoy your International Jazz Day!
