Its what they call the humble moped in Finland, and this Helsinki trio is as nimble and a speedy a runabout as their name suggests. Anchored by the gutsy baritone sax of Linda Fredriksson, last seen in Dublin with the European Saxophone Ensemble, Mopo take us on a freewheeling ride through the city at night, from speed punk to funky Afrobeat, with occasional flashes of mordant Finnish humour, free blowing and music hall nostalgia. Bassist Eero Tikkannen and drummer Eeti Nieminen keep the engine running, an they first hooked up with Fredriksson at Helsinki’s Sibelius Academy, and since 2009 they’ve been developing a loyal following on the Nordic scene, culminating in last year’s debut album Jee!, on Finnish indie label Texicalli.
