SPECTRUM: Izumi Kimura & Barry Guy

Standard Weekend Festival Pass €38: Available HERE

Pianist Izumi Kimura will be joined by renowned jazz bassist Barry Guy at this FREE SPECTRUM event on the 12th of March in the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin. An exciting opportunity to see these two world-class improvising musicians come together for a one-off event as part of Kimura's duo series 'Thought Bubbles' supported by the Arts Council of Ireland.

Izumi Kimura, Japanese born and Irish resident, is a highly acclaimed practitioner of contemporary piano music, improviser, and educator. She has performed extensively throughout the country and abroad as a solo, orchestral and chamber musician, and is admired by audiences but also by her fellow performers and ensembles from both disciplines of classical and jazz, having worked with the RTE Symphony Orchestra, Crash Ensemble, Michael D’arcy, Ioana Petcu, Cora Venus Lunny, and many more from the world of classical music, as well as jazz musicians including Tommy Halferty, Ronan Guilfoyle, Michael Buckley, Oki Itaru, Makoto Sato, Sarah Buechi, Fuzzy Logic Ensemble and more.

Barry Guy, an English composer and pioneering bassist has an extensive and influential body of work that encompasses large ensembles, solo expositions and intimate duo and trio work. He has been at the forefront of free improvisation since the mid 1970’s and he is renowned in particular for his striking approach to double bass utilising many prepared techniques on the instrument as well as intriguing percussive, bowed and tonal variations to create a sound unique to his inimitable style.

The essence and 'aliveness' of Guy’s improvisatory style of performance struck classically trained pianist, Izumi Kimura. She was particularly fascinated by the way in which the music was manifested through the speed of communication, the directness of energy, the complete trust in the unknown, and the freedom of technique and expression, anchored by their decades of experience.

Over a series of private improvisational sessions, Izumi worked on building a musical relationship with Guy, which allowed both musicians to explore and strengthen undiluted interplay through the purest form of communication.

This project marks a milestone in Izumi Kimura’s career. This project has so far challenged and expanded Kimura’s vision and possibilities as a musician, technically, interpretatively, and improvisationally. The project will be sure to provide a wonderful opportunity for audiences, to experience world renowned artists performing in a spontaneous improvisational context, in an intimate duo format that allows each musician to shine.
