Jazz Camp for Girls

Jazz Camp for Girls is a 3-day summer camp which provides the opportunity for young female identifying musicians to experience jazz music and explore improvisation in a supportive environment. The camps are designed for musicians aged 11-15 with no or little experience of improvising, and aim to inspire them through a range of activities celebrating the work of women in the Jazz industry.

Following IMC’s first Jazz Camp for Girls last summer, in association with the DCU Jazz & Contemporary Music Performance BA, and supported by Fingal Arts Office, Improvised Music Company is delighted to announce that July 2024 will see 3 separate summer camps for early teen girls running in DCU St Patrick’s campus, UCD School of Music, Belfield and MTU Cork School of Music.

Jazz Camp for Girls is a 3 day music summer camp where girls aged 11-15 can explore and learn about jazz music and improvisation in a supportive and fun environment, that also celebrates the role of women working in music. Led by professional musicians, the camps are designed to give girls their first experience of improvised music and develop confidence in their personal musicality.

Participants can come with no or little experience of improvising, just a curiosity to learn. A background in any music genre and all instruments are welcome.

Professional female musicians and educators working in jazz lead the girls as mentors and tutors over the 3 day camps, sharing their own experience as performers, while guiding the participants to explore their own interests and ability as musicians.

The Jazz Camp for Girls 2024 programme is made possible through the continued engagement of DCU Jazz and Contemporary Music Performance Degree, the support of Fingal Arts Office, and the new Improvising Across Boundaries 4-year research project which is funded by Science Foundation Ireland-Irish Research Council in association with UCD School of Music.
